le christmas list
Dear Santa,

I've been very good this year, although I'm sure you already knew that. All I want for Christmas this year is for all the oil company CEO's to die painful, lengthy, imaginative deaths after which they are forced to spend eternity filling up at $3.00 a gallon (on a minimum wage salary) only to have to sit in rush hour traffic.

In Phoenix.
In July.
With no air conditioning.

...and please don't forget the pony.

Thank you!
- Amber

$3.00 ???

I want to live where you live! It's the equivalent of $9.54 a gallon in the UK, so yeah, I second that!

OMG, NO WAY! O_O

Holy cow, that's ridiculous!

Then again, I recall watching a Tears for Fears music video in the late 1980s that showed them stopping at a petrol station with a price sign in the $3 range and everyone in the U.S. was just SHOCKED to see it. If it was already that high back then I'm sure it is 9 and a half now. Good lord but that's criminal! How do they justify it?

And there were huge lines and I remember something about petrol stations serving people in like alphabetical order by their license plates.

I remember waiting in long lines for gas with my mom during the gas crisis when I was a little girl (which would make it around 1975 since I was born in '70). It took HOURS to get into the gas station and there were lots of stations completely out of gas. It was a freakin' nightmare.

But I'm sure your guys' minimum wage and standard of living is much higher. Aren't you guys charged by the litre?

We pay £1.06 per litre which is about $2.12 these days.

Minimum wage is £5.52 per hour, or $11.00 per hour. I don't know how that compares to you guys.

66% of the price goes to the Government in tax. Plus we have Road Tax on top which varies depending on engine size but hubby and I both pay over £200 annual tax for our cars. It's an expensive business all round. We love coming to the States and hiring cars 'cause the fuel is so cheap. It's also a bit cheaper in Europe, UK is expensive by comparision.

*thinks about planning a US holiday* ;)

Minimum wage in my state was just bumped up to $6.75 an hour. It's set to go up another 75 cents to a dollar between '08 and '09 I think. It used to be $5.15 (when I started working).

The 200 pounds annual tax sounds like our equivalent to car tags.
